LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR CYLINDER HYDROSTATIC TESTING ROCKHAMPTON SERVICE

What is the process for hydrostatic testing on cylinders?

When you book your equipment in for a cylinder hydrostatic testing service Rockhampton, it undergoes a rigorous process that checks for faults and signs of wear and tear to ensure correct and consistent function of your compressed air apparatus.

An external inspection is carried out looking for physical damage, alterations, gouges, dents or corrosion. Special attention needs to be paid to repainted cylinders as they may have been heat treated or had dents or gouges filled. Dents, gouges, corrosion, or heat treating can all effect the integrity of the compressed air cylinder and result in the failure of the test.

The cylinder is then emptied, and the valve is disconnected. If in the opinion of the service technician, the valve needs to be serviced, it will usually be serviced at an additional cost to your testing service in Rockhampton.

Using telescopic mirrors, the neck thread and internal space is checked for corrosion, pitting, wear, or rust. As we all know, steel cylinders can be affected by rust. Some brands are affected more than others due to the amount of carbon used in the steel during the manufacturing process. It needs to be pointed out that rust in steel cylinders is usually a result of carelessness by its user or your fill station.

If your cylinder has been filled with moist air from a station that has not been maintaining its filters or compressor adequately, rust will occur, oil may also be found if this is the case.

The cylinder is then hooked up to the NSS Test Panel. Once all air is removed, the cylinder is pressurised to its test pressure and held there for one minute. The pressure is slowly released, and the expansion measured on a manometer tube. The maximum allowed expansion is measured as per the Australian Standards.

The cylinder is disconnected from the test panel and inverted to drain, after which it is dried using warm air on our cylinder heater. After a final internal inspection to ensure proper drying, the neck "o"ring is replaced, and the valve installed.

The cylinder is then stamped, filled, leak tested at the neck and the test certificate completed. In most cases, NSS will have this process complete and the cylinder ready to go back to you within 48 hours.
